Is Vertex42 Safe to Download? File Types, Macros and Free Copies Explained

Disclosure: ReviewEpic earns a commission if you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. We have not used Vertex42’s templates hands-on. This page is a research-based assessment built from Vertex42’s own support, purchasing and licence pages, checked on 4 November 2026. We did not scan the files ourselves.

Short answer: Yes, Vertex42 is a legitimate template publisher, and files downloaded straight from vertex42.com are ordinary spreadsheet and document files. The real risks are fake download buttons in ads, .exe “installers” and copies of paid templates posted on other sites.

  • Safe to download if: the file comes from vertex42.com (or your ClickBank receipt link for a paid template) and ends in .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods, .zip, .doc, .docx or .pdf.
  • Don’t open: anything ending in .exe, or a “free download” of Gantt Chart Pro from a third-party site.
  • Main limitation: “safe” means Vertex42’s files aren’t programs. It doesn’t make every template right for your project, and some files (.xlsm) can contain macros.
  • Price checked: most Vertex42 templates are free. Gantt Chart Pro costs $35.00 one time through ClickBank, with a 60-day refund window.

People who search “is Vertex42 safe” usually have a file in their downloads folder and a moment of doubt. Below is what Vertex42 itself says about its files, how to tell a real file from a fake, and the one download you should skip.

Is Vertex42 a legit company?

Vertex42 LLC is registered as a limited liability company in Utah, USA, according to its About page. It has published spreadsheet templates since 2003, and the founder is Jon Wittwer, Ph.D. The About page also says the company is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau. That is Vertex42’s own statement; we didn’t check the BBB listing.

What a real Vertex42 download looks like

Vertex42’s support FAQ says files downloaded from vertex42.com are “.xlsx, .xlsm, .xls, .zip, .ods, .doc, .docx, .pdf, etc.” None of them needs an install step, and Vertex42 says it doesn’t use any “install helper”.

The same page says that if you ended up with a .exe file, you did not download it from Vertex42 and probably shouldn’t open it. Vertex42’s explanation is that ads which look like download buttons sometimes slip through on its pages. So look at what you clicked: Vertex42’s own download links sit inside the template page and are labelled with the file type, such as “Excel (.xlsx)”.

Why Excel opens the file in Protected View

When you open a spreadsheet downloaded from the internet, Excel usually opens it in Protected View with a yellow bar. Vertex42’s support page tells you to click “Enable Editing” to use the template. Excel shows that bar for downloaded files in general, so it doesn’t mean the template is harmful.

Do Vertex42 templates have macros?

Most of the popular ones don’t. Vertex42 says Gantt Chart Pro works “without using any VBA or macros”, and its purchasing FAQ repeats that the Pro file contains no VBA macros. The full-year calendar templates are described as macro-free too, and founder Jon Wittwer wrote on the Vertex42 blog that he avoids macros in his templates because they cause more problems and questions.

The exception is the .xlsm format, which Vertex42 lists among its file types. An .xlsm file can hold macros, and Excel’s default settings ask before running them. Only allow macros if you know the file came from vertex42.com and the template page says it needs them.

A quick safety check before you open a file

What you see Likely source What to do
.xlsx, .xls or .ods file from a vertex42.com template page Vertex42 Open it and click Enable Editing
.xlsm file Vertex42 or someone else Confirm where it came from before you enable macros
.zip file Vertex42 (bundles and bonus files) Extract it, then check the files inside are spreadsheets or documents
.exe file or an “installer” for a template Not Vertex42, per its support FAQ Don’t run it. Delete it and scan your computer
A Google Sheets template that doesn’t show “Vertex42.com” as the author Possibly an unauthorised copy, per Vertex42 Use the Sheets link on vertex42.com instead
Gantt Chart Pro offered free on another site Not Vertex42 Skip it and use the free Gantt template or buy Pro

Is there a safe free download of Gantt Chart Pro?

No. Gantt Chart Pro is a paid template, and Vertex42 sells it from its own product page, with a ClickBank checkout. Its support FAQ warns that Vertex42 files on other websites risk being illegal copies and that it “rarely, if ever” authorises other sites to host its files. A “free” Pro copy also comes without the parts you’d pay for: the download page you return to for updates, the Google Sheets version, the bonus files and email support tied to your receipt number.

What you can get free, legitimately, is Vertex42’s regular Gantt Chart Template (Excel .xlsx, plus an OpenOffice .ods file and a Google Sheets version). Vertex42 suggests trying a free version first if you’re new to Excel. Our free vs Pro comparison lists what Pro adds, and if you work in Sheets, see which Vertex42 Gantt chart to use in Google Sheets.

Is it safe to buy from Vertex42?

Paid templates such as Gantt Chart Pro go through ClickBank, a third-party digital retailer, so you pay ClickBank rather than typing card details into a Vertex42 form. Here is what the Pro page and purchasing FAQ say you get:

  • Price: $35.00 one time, digital download, no subscription.
  • Refund: 60 days. The purchasing FAQ says you don’t need to give a reason, and your email receipt links to the ticket system where you can request it. The licence’s limited warranty states the same 60-day window for ClickBank purchases.
  • Re-downloads: you log back in to the download page with your receipt number and email. Updates are free, and Vertex42 says it will never ask you to buy an upgraded version.
  • Support: by email only (no phone). The FAQ says to expect a reply within one business day, and if a download fails Vertex42 emails you the file.
  • Licence: private use. You can share it within your company or team, but not resell it or post it publicly. In Google Drive, link sharing must be off.

Vertex42 says about 1 in 50 purchases runs into a download problem, usually a firewall or a closed browser window. If that happens, email them with your receipt number.

FAQ

Is Vertex42 free?

Most templates on vertex42.com are free to download for personal use. Some, such as Gantt Chart Pro ($35.00), are paid and sold through ClickBank.

What does Reddit say about Vertex42?

We didn’t find a Vertex42-specific Reddit thread to quote. General r/excel advice on bought workbooks lines up with Vertex42’s own: an .xlsx file has no macros to run, and .xlsm files deserve a check before you enable anything.

Can a Vertex42 template access my data?

A spreadsheet without macros can’t run VBA code; it holds formulas, data and formatting. Keep the usual care with any file that holds financial data, and don’t share it publicly (the licence forbids public sharing anyway).

Why did my download come out as an .exe?

Vertex42 says that means you clicked something other than its own download link, most likely an ad. Don’t run the file.

Are Vertex42 templates on Microsoft’s or Google’s galleries safe?

Vertex42 says it has posted some templates on office.com, openoffice.org and download.cnet.com. In the Google Docs gallery, it says to check that “Vertex42.com” is shown as the author.

Bottom line: Vertex42 is a long-running, legitimate template site, and its own downloads are plain spreadsheet and document files. Download from vertex42.com, never run an .exe, think twice before enabling macros in an .xlsm file, and skip “free” copies of Gantt Chart Pro. If you want Pro, buying it gets you updates, the Sheets version and a 60-day refund.
