As a freelance writer, the health of the economy has a significant impact on how much money I make. The failing, or rather staggering economy, has made it difficult for many of my clients to stay afloat. However, not all of my clients are struggling and making cutbacks. In fact, the most successful clients that I have are actually experiencing significant growth as they have learned to take advantage of the great opportunities for making money that a troubled economy offers to the innovative. You could make decent amount of money on site like iWriter, Freelancer or Fiverr!
One thing that I have noticed is that there is a still a huge market for niche writers. Information is one of the most valuable commodities during times of economic troubles. People want and need information about what is going on in the world, how to save money, how to make money and how to survive the stress related to working in a troubled economy. However, people are also still looking for information on topics that relate to their lives, such as child care, education, technology, small businesses, exercise, fitness, health and preparing for retirement. These are the topics that I still get requests for on a regular basis.
Marketing More Important Than Ever
Another thing that I have noticed is that the online clients that I have that are making money are the ones who are putting more effort into marketing their products. This extra push is not only helping their companies to generate more page views, but it is also helping them to tell their customers that they are still in business and still able to handle their orders. This is very important to do while the economy is struggling because many companies are going under and customers want to deal with businesses that are going to be around for awhile. This is the time to build customer loyalty and to establish your brand.
Evolving as a Professional
I have been a professional writer for nearly 15 years now and I know that in order to survive and make a living that you have to be flexible. This means evolving as a professional as market demands and conditions change. In the 90s this meant shifting written products from a strictly print based market to a web and print based market, between 2000 and 2007 it meant focusing mainly on SEO (search engine optimization) content, and today it means niche writing and SEO development.
Surviving the Economy
Being a freelance writer is not as easy or glamorous as it sounds. Often it means working for far less than your worth and working far more hours than you want to. However, there are advantages of being a freelancer. These advantages include being on the front line of information distribution, having the freedom to take what jobs you want, having the freedom to work when you want and having the flexibility to evolve quickly to meet the needs of your market.
If you are a professional who is struggling to make ends meat there is hope. The failing economy may not actually be why you sales are down or why you don’t have any clients. The problem may actually just be that your business strategy needs to be updated. To sync back up with your market examine what you do and what you sell. Then look at what people need right now. Finally, try to find a way to evolve your business so that it solves a current problem that your market has.
