Founded in 1998, eHost.com is one of the web hosting industry pioneers that has accrued and served millions of satisfied customers up to this day. They specialize in low-cost web hosting and, recently, have introduced the popular cPanel platform for shared hosting subscribers. Aside from the free domain name that’s given to you on any subscription, they also take pride in offering a drag-and-drop website builder, $300 worth of marketing promotion to amass your first site visitors, and, as customary for this industry, 45-day money back guarantee on any plan.
Having served for a bit less than 20 years, they have not always been as popular, contrary to popular belief. In fact, while their rivals were revamping their business practices so as to keep up with the ever-changing industry requirements, eHost were not as eager to do so. As such, they have only recently introduced the cPanel admin panel after many years of using the obsolete vDeck.
In spite of this, it’s good to know that eHost solely focus on simplicity. Their offering is heavily reliant on the versatile drag-and-drop website builder, which encompasses more than 1,000 easily-implementable stock templates. If you do not possess the necessary technical skills, this drag-and-drop builder will come in handy, undoubtedly, as you’ll have your website up and running in a matter of only a few hours.
For better structuring of our review, we are going to split it in a few categories as follows: reliability, uptime, guarantees and pros & cons. At the end of this review, you’ll also be able to read past customer reviews of their service, so stay tuned!
eHost Review: RELIABILITY
Opting for a definitive host can prove to be a painstaking task, and the savvier among you know it very well. However, eHost offers a series of perks that are bound to trigger even the least impulsive buyers in the world. Specifically, they offer:
1. Affordable hosting plans
For a very limited time, eHost offer 50% discount on shared hosting plans, amounting it to only $2.75 per month (Click HERE to redeem eHost latest discount). For less than $3, you’ll get everything that’s needed to design and start a successful and eye-catchy small-sized website.
2. CPanel web hosting
In addition to the unlimited-everything offer that comes packed with any shared hosting subscription, the modern cPanel admin panel allows you to access a plethora of one-click installation software, such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and forum platforms as well.
3. Drag & Drop website builder
And finally, the pinnacle of their offer: the drag-n-drop website builder. Simplicity is paramount to eHost, so spending as little time as possible on actually building the website is ideal. With it, you can create a custom page, upload images, create slideshows, publish content and create a custom contact form – all of this without the need of writing complex lines of code.
4. Customer Satisfaction-sided
On top of their “simplicity is paramount” policy, they’re also very eager to make the most out of every customer’s time. Hence, they offer a very generous 45-day money back guarantee, which gives you enough time to test their services to the fullest extent.
5. Free Trial Marketing Budget
We are all aware that driving traffic to a newly-created website might prove to be a costly burden, but fortunately, eHost offer $100 worth of Google Adwords and another $100 worth of Bing Ads credit, which is enough to gather satisfactory traffic to your brand new website from the two biggest search engines in the world.
The only bad side of eHost.com…
They only offer shared hosting services, which means that if your website grows a lot in time and needs better hosting options to support tens of thousands of monthly visitors, you’ll need to switch over to a host which offers VPS and Dedicated Server hosting, such as InMotion or BlueHost.
eHost Review: Uptime and Performance
In order to test the uptime and overall performance of websites hosted with eHost, we bought two domains through them. We built one of them using the famous drag-n-drop builder, and WordPress respectively. The results seemed to be very favorable. Hence, the website designed with the drag-n-drop builder had an average response time of 205 ms, and a 99% uptime in the last 30 days. The other WordPress-based one had an average response time of 593 ms, slightly higher than the first website, but it compensates with the impressive 100% uptime.
While these are important, what matters most for newcomers is the load time. The load time is the time that a user has to wait for the page to fully load its content. The drag-and-drop-builder-based website loaded within 3 seconds, having a page size of 3.8 MB – the WordPress-based one performed considerably better, with a loading time of only 2.5 seconds, the page having a size of 12 MB, so almost 3 times higher than the previous website’s size.
Considering all of these numbers, you can’t go wrong with either choice, as the results are not very discrepant. However, we personally prefer WordPress over eHost’s builder since WordPress is open-source software and any developer can contribute to rendering the platform better. We’re talking about thousands of developers which have contributed to WordPress till now. EHost’s site builder is, of course, very limited with regard to its performance potential and possibly won’t even benefit from a quarter of WordPress’ features and popularity. Still, WordPress is not exactly drag-and-drop either, so if you really do not want to commit to learning a bit of side programming skills, you would be better off opting for the drag-and-drop builder in the long run.
Installing Your Favorite Software to eHost
As expected, Ehost’s Quick Install tool allows you to install a wide array of software to your domain. It encompasses the most popular software available on the market, such as Blogging, Forum and eCommerce platforms: WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Concrete 5, Magento, OS Ticket, phpBB, B2Evolution, and the list goes on farther to Moodle, ZenCart, Sugar CRM, Modx, Nucleus etc.
The biggest advantage of opting for one-click install software is that you do not have to worry about not knowing how to create a database or upload files to the server, as it’s all done automatically within the preferred software. Your only concern will be to make a profit off your website – the technical jibber jabber is already dealt with.
WordPress Hosting – is it any good?
Whether you opt for WordPress or any other platform, you’ll find that your allocated part of the server will easily be able to house a few hundred unique visitors per day. Do bear in mind that, since they do not offer VPS and Dedicated Hosting plans, you’ll have to switch over to another host if your site grows too much.
Is their Website Builder powered by Weebly?
Fortunately, no. When we say “fortunately”, it’s because Weebly is not suitable for custom websites intended to make you profit. Instead, their Website Builder is powered by Websitebuilder.com, a more professional company that is more likely to create a spellbinding website for you.
Do eHost use cPanel?
Exclusively. You will be able to manage your hosting account, websites, emails etc. only through cPanel. If you have used multiple web hosts till now, you’ll find that eHost’s cPanel is slightly modified, but if you spend an extra few minutes to learn the ropes, you’ll be absolutely fine.
How do I access the Website Builder?
It’s actually a fairly easy process. When you access your eHost account for the first time, you will be prompted to choose between cPanel and Website Builder.
BE WARY: If you want to make use of WordPress, you’ll have to choose cPanel rather than Website Builder.
Once you have made your choice, the next step is to choose the domain you want to build the site around. The first step is to choose your preferred template, the website category and start filling it with pages, text, images, galleries, buttons, headings, navigation and many more. As we previously covered, the website creation requires little to no programming skills, except probably for custom CSS.
Should you choose cPanel or Website Builder?
The short answer is… it all depends on your personal preferences. cPanel offers a wider variety of platforms to use for your website, such as blogging, forum and even e-commerce, whereas the Website Builder is a “flat” builder with not-so-many options. However, the latter is a lot simpler to handle than the former, as the platforms proposed by cPanel do require extra but minimal programming knowledge to really make it stand out from the crowd. If your project is rather a hobby and you don’t really intend to squeeze much money out of it, then Website Builder is the best choice. If you want a complex website without the unnecessary hassle of knowing any programming skills, choose cPanel unhesitatingly. A good reason to choose Website Builder over WordPress is if you are a total newbie in the realms of online website creation.
Can I set up an eCommerce store on eHost?
Yes, you can, with either Website Builder or WordPress. However, with the former, you can choose a special in-house eCommerce platform that costs you $10.45 monthly and allows you to insert up to 25 products. If you want more, you’ll have to choose a better hosting plan. With WordPress, you do not benefit from the same custom hosting plan, but you can install custom e-commerce platforms such as Woocommerce.
If you wish, you can also buy a dedicated IP address and domain privacy for a couple extra bucks. For first-time customers, there are many price discounts to take advantage of, so don’t miss them out.
Speaking of Discounts, Are There Any Coupon Codes?
Unfortunately, no. The only discount you will ever get from eHost.com is upon your first registration.
Domain Transfer and Privacy
If you’ve made up your mind and would like to use Ehost.com’s services, but already have a domain and website set up elsewhere, you should contact their support team for further guidance. You cannot initiate the transfer yourself as other hosting companies allow to, so this is a compulsory step. If you used to have privacy at your previous host, you will have to pay once again at eHost for only $9.95/per domain/per year.
eHost Review: Payment Methods
The biggest advantage when opting for eHost is the myriad of available payment methods. Hence, you can pay using a credit or debit card from major providers such as Visa and MasterCard, and PayPal. They also plan on implementing Skrill, WebMoney, AlertPay and Bitcoin.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
While eHost is probably the best choice for startup companies, blogs and generally any small project due to their full dedication to shared hosting, it is not wise to opt for their services if you plan on hosting very large websites or small websites that will eventually become very complex.
Furthermore, even though their offer also includes an e-commerce hosting plan, they will still host your store on shared servers, which brings with it many problems, especially stability-wise – only if your site receives more than a thousand visitors per day. We recommend using BlueHost or Inmotion Hosting instead, as they have VPS and Dedicated Hosting offers that are very likely to cater to your needs.
